Subject:	AES vs SPDIF RE: PNO NOS

I was recently informed by a digital recorder manufacturer
that dat id's do not transmit over aes, only spdif and optical. true??????
digital smart guys {gals} please respond

From:	kludge@netcom.com (Scott Dorsey):
This is true. The AES/EBU subcode doesn't include any place to put the
data. If this is an issue, use the S/PDIF line, which is probably easier
to route anyway.

Christopher Boyd <chrisbo@bellatlantic.net>:
<snip> I have done DAT to
DAT transfers via SPDIF and I know that the indexes don't transfer (I
used a TASCAM DA30 MKII and a Panasonic, but I don't remember much more
than that)

From:	kludge@netcom.com (Scott Dorsey):
The DAT/DAT transfers will copy start ID information without any problem
unless you have a Panasonic, which implementes both S-PDIF and AES/EBU
differently than anyone else. It is possible to copy start IDs between
another machine and a Panasonic, but it may take a bit of time getting
the DIP switch settings right.

<snip> I know I've copied start IDs in a DAT/DAT transfer to
my SV3700. However, other attempts to do so have failed. (The SV3700 will
create start IDs during digital transfers the same as during analog
recording with the auto-start-ID mode enabled. This might give the
impression that Start IDs are being transferred.) <snip>
